When Should an Electric Hoist Load Chain Be Replaced?

Every lifting cycle creates contact between the chain links and the load wheel, gradually changing the link surface and pitch. Regular inspection helps identify deterioration before it affects lifting reliability.
A chain should not be judged by appearance alone. Surface damage, dimensional wear and the way the chain travels through the hoist must all be considered. Exact rejection limits depend on the chain size and hoist model and should always be taken from the manufacturer's manual.

How Chain Wear Should Be Measured
Clean the selected chain section before measurement and make sure it is not twisted. Link diameter is normally checked at the bearing surfaces where the greatest contact wear occurs. Measurements should be made in more than one direction because wear may not be uniform.
Pitch elongation is checked across the number of links specified in the operating manual. Measuring several links produces a more useful result than checking only one link. The measured value must be compared with the original dimensions and rejection limit for that particular chain.
Important: A chain can require replacement even when its measured elongation remains within limits. Cracks, severe corrosion, heat damage or distorted links are separate rejection conditions.
Why the Chain May Wear Unevenly
- Insufficient lubrication at the contact surfaces between links
- Side pulling that forces the chain to enter the hoist at an angle
- Frequent operation near the rated capacity
- Shock loading or sudden starting and stopping
- A worn chain wheel or damaged chain guide
- Twisted reeving on a multiple-fall hook assembly
- Exposure to moisture, chemicals, abrasive dust or high temperatures
Installing a new chain without correcting the cause of abnormal wear can lead to the same problem returning quickly. The chain wheel, guide components, bottom hook assembly and operating method should therefore be reviewed at the same time.

Inspection frequency should reflect operating intensity and environmental exposure. A hoist used throughout several production shifts normally requires closer monitoring than equipment used occasionally for maintenance work.
Replacing the Load Chain Correctly
Use only a replacement chain specified for the hoist model. A general-purpose chain with similar-looking dimensions may not engage correctly with the load wheel. Chain size, material, pitch, link orientation and heat treatment all affect compatibility.
Replacement should be completed by authorized or qualified personnel following the manufacturer's procedure. Multiple-fall systems require particular care because an overturned bottom block can twist the chain. After installation, chain alignment, lubrication, end connections and all hoist functions should be checked before returning normal lifting work.
Maintenance Records
Record the hoist identification, inspection date, measured dimensions, observed defects and corrective action. Keeping previous measurements makes it easier to identify whether wear is gradual or increasing unusually quickly.
